Bravely stepping into The Dragon’s
Den

Entrepreneurs go on CBC show to seek funding for their ideas, … but at the risk of public ridicule. Kitchener musician Roland Hofer pitched his idea for a novelty solar-powered rock during auditions in Waterloo in April. His idea made the cut.

An independent rock musician who has released a CD called Solar Powered Rock, Hofer’s novelty item, dubbed Rock Power, was originally used to promote his music.

In the first Dragon’s Den of the season, airing Monday at 8:00 p.m. on CBC, Hofer’s idea is met with some skepticism, but one dragon liked its kitsch factor.

” My son would love this,” crows Robert Herjavic during Hofer’s pitch.

Album- The Solar Powered Rock featuring
The Psycho Voodoo Orchestra

Intro/general thoughts: The great thing about this job is that I’m introduced to bands and artist I would never normally find, or even think of listening to. As a result I find some real gems in bands that find their way into my CD player… Lead singer Caliban’s strong almost menacing vocals( imagine Michael Stipe with a little more testosterone) only add to the band’s dark feelings, and leave the listener turning on all the lights in the house and make sure nothings under the bed…

Fans: If you like Tom Waits, R.E.M., and jangly, blue emotions that indie band Big Lazy conjure up, you’ll like Psycho Voodoo Orchestra.

Foes: People who expect their rock to be happy and peppy
